and the City of Fort Portal in Western Uganda Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27 NIV In the 1970s, the Nation of Uganda found itself in the grips of one of the most brutal dictators the world has known. For nearly a decade Idi Amin reigned terror and death upon a peaceful and prosperous people. Sadly, the leader who overthrew Amin was no better, and until 1986 death, destruction, and chaos ruled the land. Since 1986 peace has returned slowly but surely, yet fifteen years of brutality are hard to overcome. What was not known at the time of Amin, was that a far greater enemy had invaded the land. In those early days it had no formal name, but they called it "slim." People got sick, wasted away, became very "slim" and died. Today we call this AIDS. (You can read more about AIDS impact at health news HIV/AIDS) In many regards, its worst victims are not those who die, but their orphaned children left behind in a poverty stricken land with little or no hope. Into this void in May of 1996, stepped Ugandan Christians, impoverished themselves, but unwilling to watch these children be destroyed. They formed the The Good Samaritan Sponsorship Project to help these children who have no one to feed and clothe them or pay school fees for them. I have ministered periodically in Fort Portal and have seen first hand the great need of the children and the great help this project produces. One ministry of the Good Samaritan Project is to help sponsor Hope Christian School in Fort Portal. This allows orphans an opportunity for an education. Take a brief tour of Hope School. You can join this effort by adopting a child on a monthly basis ($20 or more) or with a one time or periodic gift. If you have questions, please Email the Johnsons. Send your gifts to: The Good Samaritan Sponsorship Project One-hundred percent of the funds received go to Uganda to help the children. No administrative fees are deducted in the United States and these funds are administered in Uganda by Sam Kasule who is known personally by me and I have found him to be a man of integrity. One does not have to wonder if funds given in the United States actually help children in Africa. Dick & Barbara Johnson of Ocala, Florida not only oversee the ministry here in the states, they personally travel to Uganda (at their own expense) at least twice each year to review the effectiveness of the work. ![]() Good Samaritan Children of 2005 Sam Kasule is on the left Photo by Dick Johnson Unintended Consequences Ugandan Boy Scouts |
