Liquids or lotions
- can spill or rupture and make a mess of everything in the gift bag and even ruin other gift bags, plus they raise red flags during TSA X-rays
Powdered drink mixes - too often children have mixed these in an empty plastic water bottle found beside the road using dirty surface water and become ill. Their idea is the powdered mix somehow cleans the water.
Medications or vitamins
- are available in Uganda for a nominal fee. Often we have received medications that were in fact "out of date" and that causes problems at customs. Better way is give Bob an envelope with a few dollars in it, your sponsored child's name and what you would like to be purchased in Uganda for them. Vitamins are the most common choice. I generally do not have time shop myself, but have trusted helpers in each village who have handled this quite well in the past.
Cosmetics, nail polish
- sometimes difficult to deal with cultural differences in this area and spilled nail polish is a mess
Candies that easily melt
- self-explanatory
Aerosol products
- can be dangerous if sprayed in someone eyes, and TSA X-ray issues as well
Fragile items
- self-explanatory
War toys, guns, knives, etc.
- Uganda has had a violent past
Camouflage clothing
- ditto above
Worn out or damaged items
- self-explanatory
Batteries & Items requiring batteries
- while batteries are available in Uganda, they cost money, which children typically do not have, so when the batteries are dead, so is the battery powered gift
