Things Best Purchased in Uganda

Uganda is not without the resources people need, the just do not have the funds to purchase them with. For example, mosquito nets are readily available, but cost between $10.00 and $20.00. Americans say "No big deal." But when you consider the average wage of most common Ugandan families is about $20.00 per month, you quickly see that getting nets for a family of eight would require three-fourths of a families annual income. They are numerous items that teams should take funds and purchase in Uganda, and then personally distribute, rather than use up luggage space taking such items with them. Below is a list of some suggested items:

Chickens
A dozen chicks can be purchased for less than $10.00 which upon maturity will provide meat and eggs for the family, but surples chicks and eggs to sell
Bees
I am still gathering information on bees, but I know they are available for purchase to form a hive that provides both honey for the family and excess to sell
Sewing Machine
We helped one lady purchase a sewing machine (foot petal type) to help provide family income but I have not returned to the village to see how effective this has been
Rabits
A pair of rabbits can be purchased for around $10.00 which not only provide food for the family, but surples rabbits to sell
